I hate fucking Trent Reznor, I hate fucking NIN, and I hate their fucking "music". Seriously. I used to like it in high school, when I had minimal taste, and liked whatever made me "gothier". Since then, I've developed my own sense of style, some good taste, and a healthy dose of cynicism. Why do I hate fucking Trent Reznor? Well, here's why. His music hasn't evolved. This is what, Halo 15 (gag me with the pretentiousness, BTW)? Fifteen albums of the same drivel? Angst angst *beep*. That's all there is to NIN's music. I swear on all that is holy that if Count Chocula walked in on his girlfriend cheating on him, then got his ass kicked by her and her new lover, and then drank himself into a stupor on Jagermeister nightly, whilst playing Resident Evil or Twisted Metal, he would come up with the same angsty, Transylvanian, hormonal porno songs set to video game music as Trent Reznor. Honestly, I wish someone had broken him when he was still Fragile, but now I have to hunt down and destroy the Hand that Feeds his ego.
*beep, beep* angst. I wonder how many fanboys and girls are going to delete me, after having my own disagreeable opinion about their "god".
P.S. - If you play The Downward Spiral backwards, it sounds like scratchy, crunchy Barry Manilow. No joke.
P.P.S - I demand that you gloss over my run-on sentences. That's right, I DEMAND IT! That, and you buy some good music. Something better than Trent. Like Radiohead. Or the Dayglo Abortions. Or even fuckin' Celine Dion (alright, going too far). :P

I've been listening to NIN since Pretty Hate Machine came out in '89(?), and I own every album but the new one, With Teeth (although I've heard about half the songs on it thanks to the internets). Each one of his albums is unique. Maybe not subject matter-wise, but definitely music-wise.
And the reason it took him 6 years (or however long) to put out With Teeth is because he was struggling with alcoholism and drug addiction. He was in self-destruct mode for many, many years... his addiction was the worst when he was working on The Fragile, which is why it's so different from the other albums. (I've heard people say it's his best work, and I've heard people say it's his worst. Depends on your taste.)
Many people (myself included) feel that With Teeth is not as edgy as his other albums - this is because he got clean and sober, and is happier than he's ever been. And the funny thing is, I think this album is his worst because of it. It's too mainstream, too poppy. The reason I liked NIN was because it was dramatically angsty. It was what I listened to when I was angry or heartbroken, it cured (or at least alleviated) those feelings for me.
One final thought, The Hand That Feeds is about the Bush administration, not his girlfriend breaking up with him. I'm pretty sure that this is the first song he's ever written that doesn't focus on his own personal misery. If that isn't evolution, then I don't know what is.
~D
P.S.: Trent is not my god. I just like his music. And I am totally not goth, never have been, never pretended to be.

However, I still say he hasn't evolved. I USED to own all of the albums, 'til I grew out of 'em. I also thought The Fragile was the best album. And while I know that The Hand that Feeds isn't whining about a girl, I was just making a point. Just because he's written ONE song that's NOT about his own personal misery, that doesn't mean it's evolution. More an exception.
But to each their own, and I appreciate not only your opinion, but that you were able to word it so calmly and politely. :)
